Manipur Crisis Deepens: Congress Slams BJP, Demands Shah’s Resignation
Imphal/New Delhi: The Congress party has intensified its attack on the BJP-led NDA government over the ongoing violence in Manipur. The party has highlighted the low attendance at a crucial meeting called by Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, accusing the Union Home Minister Amit Shah of neglecting the crisis.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh took to social media to express his concern, questioning the Union Home Minister’s ability to address the situation. He revealed that only 26 out of 60 MLAs attended the meeting, with four of them representing the NPP, a party that has already withdrawn support for the CM.
The violence in Manipur continues to escalate, with recent incidents including the arson of residences belonging to BJP and Congress legislators. Indefinite curfews have been imposed across Imphal Valley. The situation further deteriorated with the tragic killing of three women and three children in Jiribam district, prompting the NDA to call for a “mass operation” against Kuki militants.
Jairam Ramesh urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to prioritize the Manipur crisis and visit the state before the Parliament session commences on November 25. He called for a meeting with local stakeholders and an all-party meeting to address the issue. The Congress leader criticized the PM for his global tours while Manipur remains engulfed in violence.
The ethnic conflict between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups, which began in May 2023, has resulted in over 220 fatalities and the displacement of thousands. The urgency for decisive action to quell the violence and restore peace in the state has become paramount.
