Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on highlighted the crucial role of soil conservation in boosting agricultural productivity and ecological balance.
He announced a significant investment of Rs 24.5 crore to implement a series of projects aimed at enhancing crop yield, recharging groundwater levels, and restoring degraded ecosystems.
“Effective soil conservation practices are essential for sustainable agricultural growth. We are committed to ensuring the long-term development of Assam through sound soil management practices,” Sarma stated.
Key projects under this initiative include the Batabari Wetland Development and Integrated Water Harvesting and Erosion Control at Tiokai-Kazigaon. These projects are designed to optimize agricultural output, secure water resources, and mitigate the impacts of climate change through innovative soil and water management strategies.
The initiative will employ a range of techniques such as land and water treatment for sustainable farming, groundwater recharge systems, and large-scale reforestation to improve ecosystem health. To ensure effective implementation, district-level monitoring and GIS-based oversight will be employed, with regular progress reports and independent evaluations.
