Manipur Conflict Claims Young Father’s Life as Wife Welcomes Newborn
Imphal: In a heart-wrenching tale of love, loss, and resilience, Nengboi Doungel, a Kuki-Zo woman from Manipur’s Tamenglong district, gave birth to a baby girl at the Hmarkhawlien Relief Camp in Assam. Tragically, this joyous moment coincided with the arrival of her husband Haojoel Doungel’s lifeless body in Churachandpur district.
Haojoel had relocated his family to the relief camp to escape the escalating ethnic violence. As Nengboi’s due date approached, he ventured to Jirighat seeking financial assistance for her safe delivery. However, reports indicate that he was abducted by suspected militants and subjected to brutal torture.
Witnesses and preliminary investigations revealed severe trauma and mutilation on Haojoel’s body, found in a culvert near Anglapur village in Jiribam. Unaware of her husband’s fate, Nengboi went into labor on the same day his body reached Churachandpur.
The juxtaposition of birth and death underscored the profound grief enveloping Nengboi’s family. Despite the devastating loss, her newborn daughter brings a glimmer of hope.
