Meghalaya: Small Garo Hills Village Makes Strides in Healthcare Access

Rerapara, Garo Hills: A small village of 203 residents in Garo Hills has made significant strides in improving its healthcare access. A recent health initiative, aimed at engaging previously resistant communities, resulted in a remarkable 72% health screening coverage.

The free health screening and Village Health Council (VHC) meeting, held at the Indik Nokat Baptist Church compound under Rerapara Block, brought together various government departments to collaborate on improving rural healthcare.

Dr. Lydia Marak, the District Maternal and Child Health Officer, expressed concern over the high number of anaemic mothers identified during the screening. She emphasized the need for immediate intervention and family support for successful antenatal care and hospital admissions.

Armand Momin, the Rerapara Block Development Officer, stressed the importance of regular VHC meetings to sustain the momentum. “Regular engagement helps keep the community informed and motivated, especially those who were previously hesitant about health initiatives,” he said.

The health team conducted awareness sessions on malaria prevention, tuberculosis, leprosy, and the benefits of immunization. Education officials highlighted the significance of schooling for long-term development.

A follow-up action plan, led by District Medical and Health Officer Dr. H Barman, includes scheduled visits during Village Health and Nutrition Days. The District Program Coordinator will maintain regular contact with VHC members to monitor progress.

The initiative also introduced economic opportunities through Self-Help Groups and Village Revolving Funds, aiming to foster sustainable development in the region.
