Manipur Police Net Seven More in Property Damage Cases, Total Arrests Reach 32

Imphal: Manipur Police continued its crackdown on those involved in the recent spate of property damage incidents targeting elected officials, arresting seven more individuals on November 20 and 21. With this latest development, the total number of arrests since November 16 has climbed to 32.

The apprehended individuals, aged between 26 and 41, have been identified as Wahengbam Jyotikumar Singh, Khundrakpam Bikram Singh, Monish Nepram, Aribam Mirachandra Sharma, Elangbam Harison Singh, Lourembam Norojit Singh, Nonni Singh, and Laimayum Kedarnath Sharma.

To ensure public safety and maintain law and order, security forces have intensified their operations across the state, particularly in sensitive areas of both the hill and valley districts. Over 105 checkpoints have been established, and security convoys are being provided to safeguard essential supply vehicles along National Highways 37 and 2.

The recent unrest, triggered by the discovery of six bodies in Jiribam, has led to heightened tensions. Local MLAs have passed a resolution urging the central government to take decisive action, including a review of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and swift operations against militant groups. The resolution also seeks the involvement of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in three crucial cases: the killing of six civilians and attacks on two women.

As a precautionary measure, internet services remain suspended in seven districts to prevent the spread of misinformation and maintain peace.

Meanwhile, the political climate has further deteriorated with Chief Minister N Biren Singh accusing Congress leader P Chidambaram of being the “root cause” of the ongoing violence in the state. Singh’s remarks came in response to Chidambaram’s criticism of the state government’s handling of the crisis.
