Assam Reports Dramatic Drop in Crime, Crime Cases Reduce by Threefold in 2024
Assam: In a significant turnaround, Assam has reported a notable decline in crime rates in 2024, with the number of criminal cases dropping by a remarkable threefold compared to figures from 2021.
According to recent data released by state authorities, this drop highlights the state’s ongoing efforts to curb crime, improve investigation efficiency, and provide quicker justice to victims.
The data shows a significant reduction in registered crime cases, from 1,33,239 in 2021 to just 41,983 by October 2024. This marks a drastic threefold decrease, underscoring the effectiveness of law enforcement strategies aimed at deterring criminal activity and maintaining peace across the state.
One of the most notable achievements during this period has been the marked increase in the chargesheet submission rate. In 2021, the chargesheet rate stood at 39.40%, but by 2024, this figure has risen to 66.48%. This 67% jump reflects improvements in investigation processes, with authorities successfully bringing more cases to court, ensuring a faster and more efficient justice system.
The reduction in case volumes has also significantly lightened the workload for investigating officers. In 2021, each officer was responsible for handling an average of 69.04 cases. However, by 2024, that number has dropped to just 6.82 cases per officer, allowing for more focused and effective investigations. This reduction in workload has helped improve the overall quality of police work, resulting in more thorough investigations and faster resolutions.
Additionally, the state has made great strides in clearing its case backlog. Over 4,25,000 cases have been disposed of in the last four years, reflecting a strong commitment to addressing long-pending matters and ensuring timely justice for citizens.
The Assam government has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining safety and security in the state, emphasizing that law enforcement will continue to evolve through reforms and community engagement. Officials have made it clear that the battle against crime is ongoing, and they will continue to prioritize efforts to build a safer environment for the people of Assam.
These developments signal a promising future for the state’s law and order situation, with Assam moving closer to achieving its goal of a crime-free society. With continued efforts to strengthen police performance and public trust, the state is setting an example for crime prevention and justice delivery.
