Dhubri Emerges as HIV/AIDS Hotspot, Youth Among the Most Affected

A disturbing trend has emerged in Dhubri district, with a significant surge in HIV/AIDS cases. Between January and October 2024, over 300 individuals have tested positive for the virus, solidifying the district’s status as a red zone.

Dr. Mirdha Sanowar Hossain, the District TB and AIDS Control Officer, revealed that the district is witnessing a concerning average of 30-40 new cases each month. The alarming aspect is the diverse demographic of those affected, including a significant number of students.

A primary driver behind the crisis is the prevalent use of injectable drugs, particularly among the youth. The sharing of syringes has facilitated the rapid transmission of the virus. The lack of awareness and education about HIV/AIDS has further compounded the problem, leaving young individuals vulnerable to infection.

Health authorities have initiated measures to combat the epidemic, including awareness campaigns, increased testing, and ensuring access to antiretroviral therapy (ART). Additionally, efforts are underway to address the root cause of substance abuse through rehabilitation programs and stricter drug control measures.

Public health experts emphasize the importance of preventive measures, such as distributing clean syringes, promoting condom use, and integrating HIV education into school curriculums. Community involvement, including the participation of local leaders and NGOs, is also crucial in curbing the spread of the virus.

The situation in Dhubri underscores the ongoing challenges in the fight against HIV/AIDS. While medical advancements have made the disease manageable, addressing the social and behavioral factors remains a critical task. Timely and sustained action is imperative to prevent a full-blown public health crisis.
