Arunachal: Ten Arrested After Violent Clashes During ANSU Elections in Itanagar
Itanagar: Ten individuals were arrested on Monday following violent clashes that erupted during the vote counting process for the All Nyishi Students’ Union (ANSU) elections in Itanagar.
The clashes, which involved supporters of two rival candidates, broke out at Siddhartha Hall around 9 pm on Sunday. The incident escalated rapidly as both groups resorted to the use of sharp weapons and lathis, leaving five people injured.
The situation took a dangerous turn when gunfire was exchanged between the two factions. In response, police intervened, firing tear gas shells and stun grenades to disperse the unruly mob. Several police personnel also sustained injuries during the clashes.
The violence did not end at the hall. It spilled over to nearby hospitals, forcing injured individuals to seek refuge elsewhere.
Police recovered two live rounds and one spent shell from the scene of the crime. An FIR has been registered against the perpetrators under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act.
The situation at Siddhartha Hall has been brought under control, and the vote counting process is currently underway. Authorities are actively investigating the incident and working to identify those responsible for the gunfire.
