Assam’s HIV Battle: A Growing Challenge Amidst Low Prevalence
While Assam boasts a relatively low HIV prevalence rate of 0.13%, significantly lower than the national average of 0.20%, the state is grappling with a concerning rise in new infections.
According to the Assam State AIDS Control Society (ASACS), injecting drug use has emerged as the primary mode of transmission, accounting for a staggering 64.6% of new cases. Heterosexual transmission follows closely at 25.2%. The state recorded a disturbing 22% increase in new HIV infections in 2023 compared to 2010, with 2,021 individuals testing positive.
District-wise data for the period between April and October 2024 paints a worrying picture. Kamrup Metropolitan district leads with 533 detected cases, followed by Nagaon (375) and Cachar (360).
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma underscored the urgent need for collective action, stating, “We must reaffirm our commitment to supporting those living with HIV, challenge the stigma associated with the disease, and strive for a future free from AIDS. Let us educate, support, and fight for a world where AIDS is eradicated, and provide the best possible care to those affected.”
To combat the rising trend, the ASACS has implemented a comprehensive range of prevention strategies, including:
- Integrated Health Camps: These camps offer HIV and related disease testing services to reach a wider population.
- Prison and Closed Setting Testing: Targeted testing efforts are being conducted in prisons and other closed settings to identify and address potential outbreaks.
- Widespread Awareness Campaigns: Educational campaigns are being conducted in schools and colleges to raise awareness about HIV prevention and risk reduction.
While Assam’s overall HIV prevalence remains low, the increasing infection rates, particularly in northeastern states, call for immediate attention and targeted interventions. The state currently estimates that 32,031 individuals are living with HIV, highlighting the critical importance of continued medical support and community awareness.
