Meghalaya: NEHU Students to Resume Classes, But Protest Against VC Continues
Shillong: Amidst the ongoing turmoil at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), a glimmer of hope has emerged as protesting students, backed by the NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU – NEHU Unit), have decided to resume classes from today, December 3.
However, their resolve to oust the current Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla, remains unwavering. The student bodies have announced plans for a two-hour indefinite sit-in protest until the VC’s removal.
NEHUSU General Secretary Toniho Kharsati emphasized that the VC’s removal is their primary demand. He expressed deep concern over the month-long disruption of physical classes, which he believes is jeopardizing the future of students.
In a significant development, the student organizations are scheduled to meet with the Vice-Chancellor in-charge, Prof. Nirmalemdu Saha, to discuss the university’s academic calendar. However, they have made it clear that they will not tolerate VC Shukla’s presence on campus and will vehemently protest against any attempt to enter the university premises.
Meanwhile, VC Shukla has extended his leave for 15 days, until December 13, amidst the mounting pressure from students and faculty. The inquiry report from the Ministry of Education’s two-member committee, investigating allegations of mismanagement and administrative failures at NEHU, is still awaited.
