Manipur Resumes Inter-District Public Transport Amidst Fragile Peace

Imphal: In a significant step towards normalcy, the Manipur government has announced the resumption of inter-district public vehicle services from Wednesday. The decision comes amidst a period of relative calm after months of ethnic clashes that have plagued the state.

The move aims to alleviate the hardships faced by the public due to the disruption of essential services. Public vehicles will operate on two key routes: Imphal to Senapati via Kangpokpi, and Imphal to Churachandpur via Bishnupur.

To ensure the safety of passengers and crew, stringent security measures will be in place along the routes. The government has urged the public to cooperate with authorities and refrain from any actions that could disrupt the services or escalate tensions.

It’s worth noting that this is the second attempt by the government to restore public transport in the region. A similar initiative last year was met with limited success due to ongoing unrest.

The state has been grappling with ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities since May 2023, resulting in numerous casualties and widespread displacement. The government’s latest effort is a cautious step towards rebuilding trust and fostering peace in the troubled state.
