Devendra Fadnavis to Assume Maharashtra CM Role for Third Term

Mumbai: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Devendra Fadnavis has been named Maharashtra’s Chief Minister for a third term, following a unanimous decision at a key BJP meeting held on December 4. The move concludes days of speculation after the Mahayuti alliance’s resounding victory in the state elections.

The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for December 5 at 5 p.m. at Mumbai’s iconic Azad Maidan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend, underscoring the significance of the event for the ruling party.

Fadnavis will be joined by Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde as Deputy Chief Minister, along with the Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP) Ajit Pawar, reflecting the coalition’s power-sharing arrangement. The announcement was made by BJP Maharashtra President Chandrashekhar Bawankule, signaling a united front among the allies.

Speaking at a BJP event after the announcement, Fadnavis echoed PM Modi’s slogan, “Ek hai, safe hai,” affirming the coalition’s unity and focus on governance. His leadership was credited as instrumental in securing the BJP’s historic victory in Maharashtra, where the party won 132 of the 149 seats it contested.

The decision to nominate Fadnavis was formally proposed by BJP observer Vijay Rupani and unanimously supported by senior leaders, including Sudhir Mungantiwar and Pankaja Munde. Fadnavis’s ability to navigate Maharashtra’s complex political landscape has cemented his role as a pivotal figure in the state.

With the Mahayuti alliance comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP factions, the new government aims to deliver stability and development in one of India’s most politically and economically significant states.
