Meghalaya: NEHU Resumes Normal Classes After Weeks of Unrest
Shillong: North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has announced the resumption of normal classes for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as those pursuing professional courses, effective December 4.
The decision comes after weeks of student protests demanding the removal of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla. The protesting students, backed by the NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU – NEHU Unit), had earlier planned an indefinite two-hour sit-in demonstration to press their demands.
NEHUSU General Secretary Toniho Kharsati had expressed concerns over the prolonged absence of physical classes, stating that it was jeopardizing the academic future of the students.
On December 2, VC Shukla extended his leave for 15 days, until December 13, amidst the ongoing protests. The university is still awaiting the inquiry report from the two-member committee appointed by the Ministry of Education to investigate allegations of mismanagement and administrative failures.
