Assam MP Rameswar Teli Backs Government’s Beef Consumption Ban
Assam: The Assam government’s recent decision to extend the ban on beef consumption to restaurants, hotels, and public places has sparked varied responses across the political spectrum.
Rajya Sabha MP from Assam, Rameswar Teli, expressed his support for the decision, thanking Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Teli emphasized that the move was beneficial for all, including the opposition.
BJP leader Pratul Shah Deo also welcomed the ban, pointing out that Congress had previously advocated for such a measure during by-polls. He urged Congress to accept the decision, highlighting that it was made in the interest of the public.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi dismissed any political motives behind the ban but noted the CM’s potential efforts to gain political advantage. Chaturvedi referred to past electoral setbacks in Jharkhand, suggesting that divisive politics could backfire.
On the other hand, Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed strongly criticized the decision, accusing the Assam government of aligning with the principles of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and violating constitutional rights. He argued that the Constitution guarantees the right to choose one’s food, and the ban undermines this fundamental freedom.
The decision, announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, is an extension of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, which was initially passed in 2021 to limit cattle slaughter. Sarma clarified that while the previous law applied only near temples, the new regulation now extends to all public places, including hotels, restaurants, and public events.
