Assam: Protests Erupt in Sribhumi Over Minority Persecution in Bangladesh; Trade Ties Severed

Assam: Tensions have escalated in Assam’s Sribhumi district, where a group of youths staged a protest by painting the national flag of Bangladesh on roads at several locations.

The symbolic act, aimed at highlighting the desecration of the Indian flag and the ongoing persecution of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, saw vehicles driving over the painted flags to intensify their message.

The protesters condemned the interim government of Bangladesh for its inaction against atrocities targeting Hindu minorities. Warning of further protests, they expressed frustration at the global silence on these issues, contrasting it with widespread outcries over conflicts in countries like Iran and Syria.

Amid growing unrest, trade relations between Sribhumi and Bangladesh have come to a standstill. The Sribhumi Import and Export Association announced an indefinite suspension of all trade activities, citing concerns over the persecution of minorities. No goods will be exported to or imported from Bangladesh until further notice.

Earlier this week, MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha led demonstrations urging the Indian government to reassess its trade ties with Bangladesh. His protests, which garnered significant support, have prompted local trade associations to act decisively.

The situation in Sribhumi reflects rising regional discontent and calls for accountability, with demands for immediate action to ensure the safety and rights of minority communities in Bangladesh.
