Assam BJP Hails Beef Ban as Historic Step Towards Preserving Cultural Sentiments

Guwahati: The Assam Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has lauded the recent Cabinet decision to ban public beef consumption in the state, terming it a significant milestone in safeguarding Assam’s cultural and religious heritage.

The party asserted that the move is a testament to the state government’s commitment to protecting Assamese values and respecting the religious beliefs of its people. “This decision underscores our unwavering focus on fostering a harmonious society where the sentiments of all communities, especially the majority Hindu population, are honored,” said a senior BJP leader.

Drawing parallels to the 1958 Supreme Court judgment upholding Bihar’s beef ban, the BJP highlighted the economic importance of cattle preservation. The party also pointed out that several other states, including Maharashtra and Gujarat, have implemented similar restrictions on cattle slaughter.

While acknowledging the constitutional right to freedom of religion, the BJP emphasized that this right is subject to public order, morality, and health. “The beef ban is not merely about religious sentiments but also about promoting a broader sense of public order and well-being,” the party explained.

The party further cited Article 48 of the Indian Constitution, which directs states to prohibit cow slaughter and promote animal welfare. The BJP expressed confidence that Assam’s decision will set a precedent for other states to follow, fostering peaceful coexistence and respect for local customs.
