Manipuri Women Find Hope in Crochet, Turning Trauma into Triumph
In the heart of Manipur, where conflict has cast a long shadow, a beacon of hope is emerging. A group of displaced women, victims of the ongoing violence, are transforming their adversity into artistry, thanks to a unique initiative called “Project Stitching Hope.”
Launched by a Singapore-based Manipuri tech entrepreneur, Karam Monish, under his One Million Heroes initiative, this project is empowering women by teaching them the delicate art of crochet. By creating adorable amigurumi dolls, these women are not only finding solace but also earning a sustainable livelihood.
“It’s incredible to see how these women, who have lost everything, are now using their skills to rebuild their lives,” said Nomita Ningthoujam, Project Manager for One Million Heroes. “Each doll tells a story of resilience and hope.”
The project has trained over 50 women, providing them with the necessary skills and resources. The dolls, ranging from simple animals to intricate cultural figures, are gaining popularity both domestically and internationally. The project team is actively marketing the products through e-commerce platforms and exhibitions, ensuring that the stories of these women reach a wider audience.
“This initiative is more than just a skill development program,” said Urmila, a beneficiary of the project. “It’s a lifeline, a way to regain our dignity and provide for our families.”
As the conflict continues, Project Stitching Hope remains committed to empowering more women and helping them turn their trauma into triumph. By supporting these women, we can contribute to their healing process and help them build a brighter future.
