Assam: Infant Missing After Boat Capsizes on Brahmaputra

A tragic boat accident occurred on the Brahmaputra River near Satkata Char, a village bordering Bongaigaon and Goalpara districts, on Saturday, December 8. The incident resulted in the disappearance of a one-and-a-half-month-old infant.

The ill-fated motorized boat, carrying approximately 35-40 passengers, was traveling from Usungar Char to Chapar Bazar when it capsized in the turbulent waters. While most passengers were rescued by swift-acting emergency responders, the infant remains unaccounted for.

Rescue teams, including river police from the Majer Alga outpost, have been tirelessly searching the river since the accident. Despite their efforts, the boat has completely submerged, leaving no visible clues on the water’s surface. The challenge of locating the missing infant is compounded by the vast expanse of the river and the strong currents.

Local authorities are urging caution and vigilance for river travelers, especially during the monsoon season when water levels rise and currents intensify. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with riverine transportation, even for short distances.
