Sikkim: Woman Found Dead in Singtam, Husband Arrested for Murder
Singtam: A 36-year-old woman, Amrita Kami, was found dead under suspicious circumstances in the Tinek area of Singtam on December 11, 2024. Following a thorough investigation, her husband, Ratan Bahadur Kami, has been arrested on charges of murder.
The case came to light when Bikash Baraily, a relative of the deceased, filed a police report after discovering Amrita’s lifeless body at her residence. The FIR detailed that Baraily arrived at the scene around 7:00 AM to find Amrita lying on her bed with visible bruises around her eyes, chin, and back, raising concerns about foul play.
Initial reports suggested Amrita had fallen near the cowshed the previous day. However, further investigation revealed a history of domestic abuse, with accounts of frequent physical and mental harassment by her husband. It was also noted that Amrita struggled with alcoholism.
An autopsy conducted on December 12 confirmed the cause of death as asphyxia due to neck vessel occlusion, coupled with shock and hemorrhage caused by blunt force trauma. The report listed 19 distinct injuries on her body, strongly indicating foul play.
Based on the autopsy findings, the case was reclassified from an Unnatural Death to a murder investigation. The Singtam Police charged Ratan Bahadur Kami under Section 103(1) of the BNS. The 38-year-old resident of Upper Tinek, Gangtok, was subsequently taken into custody on December 13.
The police investigation is ongoing, with authorities delving deeper into the couple’s troubled relationship and the history of domestic abuse that preceded the tragic incident.
