Book on Manipur Violence Unveiled Amid Ongoing Crisis, Aims to Expose Truth and Inspire Justice
Imphal: A new book titled “Report on the Manipur Violence: A Historical Contextualization of State-Sponsored Ethnic Cleansing” was unveiled at a gathering of scholars, intellectuals, and concerned citizens, shedding light on the ethnic conflict that has gripped Manipur since May 3, 2023.
The event, marked by solemn prayers and impassioned speeches, emphasized the importance of confronting misinformation and documenting the lived realities of the affected communities.
The gathering opened with a reflective prayer led by Evangelist Hoijalhing, setting the tone for a discussion deeply rooted in both introspection and action. Pu N Touthang, Finance Secretary of Kuki Inpi, Delhi, addressed the audience, underscoring the urgency of combating false narratives surrounding the violence. He emphasized that the book serves as a critical tool in exposing the truth and ensuring that the voices of the marginalized are heard.
Retired Reverend Paothang Haokip, Bishop and Deputy Moderator of the Good Shepherd Church of India, offered a prayer invoking strength and courage, grounding the event in spiritual solidarity. His words resonated with the audience, many of whom are navigating immense personal and collective adversity.
Benjamin Mate, Chairman of KOHUR and a key figure behind the book’s creation, introduced the report as a powerful response to misinformation. Calling it “a shield against lies and a beacon of justice,” Mate highlighted its role in dismantling fabricated accounts of the violence and reaffirming the historical and cultural identity of the Kuki-Zo community.
K Vanlalvena, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) from Mizoram, delivered a poignant speech that underscored the shared history and unity among the Zo ethnic groups. He urged the community to channel their grief into collective strength, framing the crisis as an opportunity for renewal and resilience. His call for solidarity resonated with the audience, many of whom are seeking ways to rebuild in the wake of ongoing violence.
Paojakhup Guite, President of the Kuki Students’ Organization, Delhi, expressed profound gratitude for the book’s creation, praising the leadership of Benjamin Mate and his team. He described the report as a pivotal contribution to the fight for justice, with its message poised to resonate far beyond the immediate community. Guite highlighted the importance of the book as a testament to the Kuki-Zo community’s struggle and a cornerstone in the broader pursuit of truth and reconciliation.
