Mizoram: ZPM Stakes Claim to Form Board in Chakma Autonomous District Council Despite Falling Short of Majority
Aizawl: The Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) has moved to form a new board in the 20-member Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) in Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district, despite falling just short of the majority mark.
The political maneuver comes after five members of the Mizo National Front (MNF) defected to the ZPM, making it the largest party in the council with the support of *10 members. However, the party still remains one seat shy of the majority threshold of 11.
On Monday, a delegation of 10 ZPM members, led by senior leader Mohan Chakma, met Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati at the Raj Bhavan to formally stake their claim to form the next board. The delegation submitted a letter to the governor, asserting their numerical strength and their intent to take charge of the council’s administration. The governor is now expected to review the situation and make a decision in the coming days.
The CADC has been in a state of political uncertainty since *December 11, when the MNF-led board, headed by **Chief Executive Member (CEM) Rasik Mohan Chakma, was ousted following a *no-confidence motion. The removal marked a significant shift in the council’s political dynamics, opening the door for the ZPM to stake its claim despite not holding an outright majority.
With the deadlock persisting, political observers believe that the governor’s decision will be pivotal in determining the council’s leadership and resolving the ongoing uncertainty. The ZPM’s efforts to form the board highlight its determination to consolidate its influence in the region amid a fragmented political landscape.
