Assam: Government Waterbody in Sribhumi Faces Mismanagement and Unauthorized Activities
Assam: A government-owned waterbody in Sribhumi district’s Shonbil area is embroiled in controversy due to allegations of financial mismanagement and unauthorized activities.
The Rata Beel Fishery, one of two government-managed waterbodies in the region, was recently put up for auction with a steep reserve price of nine lakh rupees. However, the high price deterred potential bidders, resulting in a failed tender process.
Following the auction’s failure, local residents reportedly began fishing in the waterbody without depositing any revenue to the government. Additionally, concerns have been raised about the introduction of harmful materials into the water, posing a threat to aquatic life.
The Rata Beel Fishery falls under the jurisdiction of the Fishery Corporation, while another nearby waterbody is managed by the Fisheries Department. Despite efforts by the Beel Manager to curb unauthorized fishing, the activities continue unabated, leading to significant revenue losses.
This has sparked questions about the rationale behind setting such a high reserve price, which ultimately rendered the tender process unviable. Observers are now calling for an investigation into the matter, demanding accountability for the loss of revenue and the misuse of the waterbody. The lack of oversight in managing this valuable public resource has raised concerns among stakeholders, who are urging immediate action to prevent further losses and environmental damage.
