Assam: Youth Congress and NSUI Protest Over Death of Mridul Islam
Assam: The Youth Congress and National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) staged a large-scale protest outside Indira Bhavan in Sribhumi city on Thursday, expressing outrage over the tragic death of Congress member Mridul Islam.
Protesters burned an effigy of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, demanding justice and accountability for the incident.
Youth Congress State Secretary Subhajit Chakraborty led the protest, delivering a scathing critique of the government’s handling of the situation.
Chakraborty accused the state administration of negligence, linking Islam’s death to the police’s alleged excessive use of force during the “Raj Bhawan Chalo” protest in Guwahati.
“Yesterday, the Pradesh Congress organized a rally addressing issues such as smart meters, the Adani scandal, and the crisis in Manipur. Following directions from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, one of our senior members and advocate, Mridul Islam, was killed by tear gas sprayed by the Assam Police. We vehemently condemn this incident,” Chakraborty declared.
He further criticized Sarma for his political transition from the Congress to the BJP, accusing him of betrayal. “You left Congress after benefiting from it, and now, as a BJP member, you are running your government. We will respond to this incident in 2026,” he said, alluding to the upcoming state elections.
The protest underscored the Congress’s demand for a judicial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Islam’s death. Chakraborty assured supporters that the party would persist in its efforts to hold the government accountable and seek justice for the deceased.
