Meghalaya: East Khasi Hills District Issues Ban on Overloaded Hay-Laden Trucks in Shillong for Public Safety
Shillong: The District Magistrate of East Khasi Hills has enforced a prohibitory order under Section 163 of the BNSS, banning the movement of overloaded hay-laden trucks and pickups along the Mawtawar-Mawsiatkhnam Road and across Shillong city.
The decision was made in response to safety concerns regarding the risk of electric wire contact, which could trigger fire incidents, as well as the disruption caused by hay falling from the vehicles, creating litter and obstructing community cleaning efforts.
Effective immediately and until further notice, the order prohibits the transportation of hay in overloaded vehicles on the specified routes. Violators of the directive will face legal consequences under Section 188 of the BNSS.
Local authorities are emphasizing the need for strict adherence to the order to ensure public safety and maintain cleanliness. The District Magistrate has assured rigorous enforcement of the ban, aiming to prevent potential accidents and support ongoing community cleaning initiatives.
The move has received support from the local community, who have long raised concerns about the safety risks and environmental issues caused by the littering of hay. Community leaders have praised the government’s proactive approach in addressing these pressing concerns.
Truck operators and other stakeholders are being urged to adjust their operations to comply with the order, contributing to a safer and cleaner Shillong.
