Sikkim CM Highlights Key Development Needs at NEC Plenary Meeting
Gangtok: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, during the 72nd Plenary Meeting of the North Eastern Council (NEC) on December 21, called for strategic interventions to accelerate the region’s development and address critical challenges.
The meeting, chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, brought together regional leaders to discuss priorities for sustainable growth in the northeastern states.
Describing the meeting as an “honour and privilege,” Tamang expressed gratitude for the Union Government’s continuous support and highlighted key issues affecting Sikkim. He emphasized the importance of collective efforts to achieve the national vision of Viksit Bharat-2047, noting that the Union Budget 2024-25 aligns with this mission.
Tamang underscored the pivotal role of tourism and the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sectors in Sikkim’s economy. He called for enhanced Central support to improve tourism infrastructure and foster growth in these sectors. He also proposed a pilot project under the NEC to promote tourism and entrepreneurship, with a special focus on ecotourism.
The Chief Minister further suggested reopening the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra through Sikkim and establishing an Integrated Check Post and a Multimodal Corridor at Chiwa Bhanjyang on the Nepal border to boost trade and connectivity between India and Nepal.
Addressing infrastructure challenges, Tamang urged prompt action to resolve disruptions along NH10 caused by Teesta floods and river silting. He also sought the expedited completion of the railway project and improvements to Pakyong Airport to ensure all-weather connectivity.
Looking ahead, Tamang reflected on Sikkim’s upcoming Golden Jubilee Year of Statehood, set for May 16, 2025, and expressed pride in the state’s achievements over the past five decades. He also praised the Central Government for initiatives like the UNNATI Scheme 2024, which aims to create employment opportunities for the youth.
Tamang extended his thanks to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the NEC, and the Tripura Government for their hospitality and the smooth organization of the meeting. He concluded by acknowledging the importance of the Home Minister’s visionary guidance and the collaborative efforts of northeastern states in building a sustainable and prosperous future for the region.
