MHA Establishes Tribunal to Review ULFA’s Status as an Unlawful Association

Assam: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has constituted an Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal to examine whether the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), including its factions, wings, and front organizations, should continue to be classified as an unlawful association.

The tribunal will be chaired by Justice Michael Zothankhuma of the Gauhati High Court, who will lead the adjudication process.

This initiative is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to address national security concerns and review ULFA’s legal status under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967. The organization has been periodically banned under the Act, with the latest prohibition imposed on November 27, 2019, and recently renewed.

The MHA’s notification cited ULFA’s involvement in activities that threaten India’s sovereignty and integrity as the basis for its continued designation as an unlawful association. The government’s action reflects a commitment to countering organizations engaged in activities deemed detrimental to the nation.

In the past five years, significant actions have been taken against ULFA. According to MHA data, three hardcore ULFA cadres have been neutralized in security operations, and 15 cases have been registered against the outfit’s members. These efforts have resulted in three chargesheets and the prosecution of three cadres.

The tribunal’s findings will play a critical role in determining the future legal status of ULFA and its affiliates, ensuring that the government’s measures align with the broader objective of safeguarding national security.
