New GOC of Sikkim’s Black Cat Division Meets Governor, Discusses Development and Security
Gangtok: The newly-appointed General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 17th Mountain Division, Major General M S Rathore, paid a courtesy visit to Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur at Raj Bhavan on December 23.
Accompanied by his predecessor, Major General Amit Kabtiyal, the meeting focused on the progress of key development projects and the region’s security landscape.
A major topic of discussion was the Prerna Sthal, a memorial under construction to honor the soldiers who lost their lives in the October 2023 Teesta flood. The Governor and the GOCs reviewed the ongoing work at the site and deliberated on its future development plans.
Governor Mathur took the opportunity to reflect on Sikkim’s military legacy, particularly the significant contributions of Major General Sagat Singh during the 1967 India-China War at Nathula Pass. He emphasized the importance of recognizing the state’s military history and its enduring impact on the region.
The meeting also touched upon the upcoming 50th foundation day celebrations of Sikkim, with the Governor highlighting the elaborate plans in place to mark this historic milestone in the state’s journey to statehood.
Governor Mathur expressed his appreciation for Major General Amit Kabtiyal’s dedicated service during his 18-month tenure, acknowledging his role in ensuring the region’s security. He also praised the Black Cat Division for organizing the National Integration Tour, which played a significant role in fostering unity and patriotism among Sikkim’s residents.
The visit underscored the strong collaboration between Sikkim’s civil and military leadership in addressing development and security priorities while honoring the state’s rich heritage.
