Gaurav Gogoi Criticizes PM Modi for “Optics” on Constitution, Slams Silence on Shah’s Remarks on Ambedkar
Assam: Congress leader and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, launched a sharp critique against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of indulging in “mere optics” when it comes to his reverence for the Indian Constitution.
In a scathing remark, Gogoi alleged that while the Prime Minister publicly demonstrates respect for the Constitution, he chooses to remain silent when members of his own government, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, allegedly disrespect Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the principal architect of the Indian Constitution.
“It is unfortunate that PM Modi indulges in mere optics by putting his head to the Indian Constitution. Yet, when his own Union Home Minister abused the main architect of the Constitution, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, he remained silent,” said Gogoi. “This is only a reflection of their history and age-old disrespect for BR Ambedkar.”
Gogoi’s remarks come amid growing tensions between the BJP and Congress over the interpretation and legacy of India’s constitutional values. The Congress has been positioning itself as the protector of the Constitution and social justice, accusing the BJP of neglecting these ideals.
While the BJP has yet to officially respond to Gogoi’s comments, party leaders have frequently highlighted their initiatives to honor Dr. Ambedkar, including welfare programs named after him.
This exchange highlights the contentious political narrative surrounding Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy, with both parties seeking to assert their commitment to his vision as they prepare for upcoming elections.
