Mizoram Celebrates Christmas with Joyful Community Feasts and Sustainable Practices
Aizawl: Across Mizoram, Christmas community feasts were celebrated with great joy and positivity on December 25. Churches began preparations early in the morning, with volunteers from the community cooking a variety of dishes to share during the event.
Children participated in special programmes organized to add to the festive atmosphere. True to tradition, the feast included a dedicated section for relatives of the elderly and physically weak who were unable to attend. Family members of those individuals could register their names at a counter to receive free food.
In a move to reduce environmental impact, many churches heeded the request of the Mizoram Pollution Control Board and stopped using disposable plastics for the Christmas feasts. Instead, they opted for paper cups, steel plates, and in some cases, banana leaves to serve the food, reflecting a growing commitment to sustainability.
Churches and communities across Mizoram also planned to host similar feasts on December 26, with a New Year’s community feast scheduled for January 2, 2025.
