Angela Rangad Files Complaint Against Church Desecration Incident in Meghalaya

Shillong: Social activist Angela Rangad, leader of the Thma U Rangli-Juki (TUR) organization, has lodged a formal complaint with Laitumkhrah police against Akash Sagar, who is accused of trespassing and desecrating the Church of Epiphany in Mawlynnong, East Khasi Hills.

The complaint, filed on Thursday, references videos widely circulated on platforms like Facebook and Instagram. The footage shows Sagar entering the church’s altar area and allegedly engaging in actions deemed disrespectful to the religious sanctity of the space. According to the FIR, Sagar shouted non-Christian slogans and mockingly sang religious hymns, behavior that Rangad described as disruptive and intentional.

Rangad’s complaint further alleges that the incident was premeditated and involved two other individuals seen in the video. She asserted that the act aimed to create communal tension, disrespect minority cultural practices, and spread hate, violating the principles of religious freedom enshrined in the Indian Constitution.

The activist also flagged the promotion of the video on certain social media platforms, accusing them of spreading religious majoritarianism and inciting hatred. She urged the authorities to take immediate legal action against the perpetrators and demanded the removal of the video from online platforms to curb further escalation.

“This criminal act and conspiracy must be addressed to maintain public peace and prevent fear within the community,” Rangad stated. She called on social media platforms to hold users accountable for sharing inflammatory content and emphasized the need to protect Meghalaya’s tradition of religious harmony.
