Sikkim: Gangtok Enforces Strict Winter Safety Protocols at Sherathang Check Post
Gangtok: Gangtok police have implemented stringent winter safety protocols at the Sherathang Check Post, mandating all vehicles to be equipped with snow removal tools and chains as tourist arrivals surge.
This move comes in response to the increasing number of tourists seeking to experience the region’s winter attractions, particularly snow-viewing opportunities.
The new protocols require all vehicles to carry shovels for emergency snow clearance and install tyre chains to enhance traction on icy mountain roads.
Furthermore, authorities have established rigid entry and exit timelines, with vehicles required to pass through the 3rd Mile Check Post before 10:30 am and depart by 5:00 pm. This strict schedule aims to prevent tourists from being stranded in potentially hazardous conditions after nightfall.
A significant shift from previous practices, vehicle permits must now be obtained in advance. Moreover, the new regulations incorporate mandatory waste management measures, requiring all vehicles to carry dustbins or trash bags.
While initial concerns regarding implementation costs were raised by tourism operators, they have largely welcomed these safety measures.
