KJCLF Urges Stricter Tourism Guidelines Following Church Desecration Incident in Meghalaya
Shillong: The Khasi Jaintia Church Leaders’ Forum (KJCLF) has called on the Meghalaya government, the tourism industry, and community and religious leaders to enforce stricter guidelines for tourism and community-related activities in the state. This demand follows an incident involving Akash Sagar, accused of desecrating a church in Mawlynnong, East Khasi Hills.
In a statement, KJCLF secretary Rev Dr. EH Kharkongor condemned the act, urging tourists to approach their travels with respect and sensitivity. He criticized the accused for invoking the phrase “Jai Shri Ram” in a Christian place of worship, describing the act as deeply offensive to the local communities and Christians in the region.
Rev. Kharkongor labeled the individual as a “degraded prankster with a warped ego,” emphasizing that such actions constitute a blatant intrusion into sacred spaces. He further noted that the incident seemed designed to fuel disharmony, discord, and division among ethnic and religious communities, suggesting it aligns with a broader agenda of disrespect and hate.
Highlighting a series of recent incidents allegedly targeting the Christian community, Rev. Kharkongor pointed to cases such as the intrusion into the Mawjymbuiñ Cave, the controversial Cow Protection Yatra, and derogatory remarks on cultural icons in Dima Hasao, Haflong. The Forum expressed concerns about these incidents, urging for vigilance and measures to preserve the region’s communal harmony and sanctity.
The KJCLF’s appeal underscores the growing need for responsible tourism and respect for cultural and religious diversity in Meghalaya, a state celebrated for its vibrant traditions and heritage.
