Assam Police STF Arrests Key Terror Suspect in Kokrajhar District
Assam: The Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police made a significant breakthrough on Monday with the arrest of a key suspect involved in terror activities.
Gazi Rahman, a 35-year-old resident of Bhodeyaguri, Kokrajhar, was apprehended for his alleged links to jihadi outfits Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT).
IGP (STF) Partha Sarathi Mahanta confirmed the arrest as part of Operation Praghat, a statewide operation targeting anti-national activities. Mahanta stated, “With the assistance of Kokrajhar Police, the STF successfully apprehended the absconding accused. Legal procedures are underway, and investigations continue.”
Rahman’s arrest follows a series of successful operations under the ongoing mission. On December 27, the STF apprehended Shahinur Islam, 36, from Dhubri district. During a raid in Bandhabpara, Bilasipara, authorities recovered incriminating materials, including Urdu books, personal identification documents, and electronic devices.
In another major development, a raid conducted on December 24 in Kokrajhar’s Namapara area resulted in the foiling of a potential terror attack. Two suspects, Abdul Zaher Sheikh and Sabbir Mirdha, were arrested, and a large cache of weapons, explosives, and IED-making materials were seized. These included handmade rifles resembling AK-47s, live ammunition, and explosive devices.
The STF’s operations have now led to the arrest of 12 individuals connected to jihadi networks in Assam, West Bengal, and Kerala. Assam Police’s ongoing efforts underscore their commitment to dismantling terror networks and ensuring the safety and security of the state. Further investigations are underway to fully neutralize these threats.
