Ajay Kumar Bhalla Sworn in as Manipur Governor Amid Ongoing Ethnic Violence

Imphal: Ajay Kumar Bhalla was sworn in as the new Governor of Manipur on January 3. The oath of office was administered by Manipur High Court Chief Justice D Krishnakumar in a ceremony attended by Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, MLAs, high-ranking officials, and police officers.

Bhalla, who is stepping into the role amidst ongoing ethnic violence in the state since May 2023, took the oath as the successor to Lakshman Prasad Acharya, who had served as the Governor since July 2023. The reshuffle comes as the state grapples with unrest and tensions.

In addition to the swearing-in, Bhalla also inspected a guard of honour by Manipur Rifles personnel. The appointment of Bhalla, approved by President Droupadi Murmu, marks a significant shift in leadership as the state seeks stability and peace.

Bhalla, who previously served as the longest-serving Union Home Secretary, completed his five-year tenure in August 2023, bringing extensive experience in governance to his new role as Governor.
