Assam: Guwahati Water Board Pays Rs 4.80 Lakh Compensation to Residents Affected by Pipeline Incident

Assam: The Guwahati Metropolitan Drinking Water & Sewerage Board has sanctioned Rs 4.80 lakh in compensation to four residents whose properties were damaged in a pipeline incident in Kharguli on January 2, 2025.

Each affected resident, namely Anowar Hussain, Abu Fateh Ahmed, Moumin Seikh, and Binita Das, will receive Rs 1.20 lakh for the severe damage caused. This compensation falls under the JICA-assisted GWSP (Greater Guwahati Water Supply Project) scheme.

According to reports, the incident occurred due to a pressure surge triggered by a power interruption during preparations for the commissioning of a newly established surge protection tank at the Kharguli Water Treatment Plant (WTP).

Assam Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah addressed the media on Thursday, stating that preliminary investigations indicate a pressure surge led to the pipeline burst. He emphasized that experts had previously recommended the establishment of a surge protection tank, which was implemented and scheduled to become operational the following day. Unfortunately, the incident occurred during the preparatory phase. Minister Mallabaruah further stated that the technical aspects of the incident are being thoroughly investigated and that the Chief Minister has been informed about the situation.

The compensation has been authorized under Section 80 of the Guwahati Metropolitan Drinking Water & Sewerage Board Act, 2009.
