Sikkim Bans Entry of Under-21s in Pubs and Bars to Promote Safety and Values

Gangtok: In a bid to promote safety and uphold cultural values, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has announced that individuals below 21 years of age will not be allowed entry into pubs, discos, and bars across the state.

The announcement comes shortly after his directive requiring such establishments to close by 11 PM.

Addressing the Gangyap Namsoong celebration in Yuksom-Tashiding constituency, CM Tamang urged bar and restaurant owners to adhere strictly to these guidelines and refrain from serving alcohol to students. He warned that violations could result in the immediate cancellation of trade licenses, with no possibility of renewal.

“Any trade stakeholders found flouting the norms may face legal consequences, including the cancellation of their trade license,” he stated.

To ensure compliance, CM Tamang emphasized the need for mandatory identification checks for all patrons. “We urge hotel and bar owners to compulsorily check the identity of an individual, in any form, before allowing him/her into the premises,” he added.

The new regulation aligns with the state government’s broader efforts to maintain public safety and protect Sikkimese values.
