Assam Police Seizes Heroin Worth ₹3.2 Crore in Cachar District

Assam: In a significant drug bust, Assam Police intercepted a motorcycle on Kathal Road in Cachar district on the night of January 4, recovering 635 grams of heroin valued at an estimated ₹3.2 crore.

The operation, carried out by the Cachar Police based on reliable intelligence, led to the seizure of the narcotics, which were reportedly being transported from a neighboring state. The rider of the motorcycle has been arrested, and authorities are continuing their investigation into the case.

This successful operation adds to Assam’s ongoing crackdown on drug trafficking, which has been intensified in recent years. In 2024 alone, Assam Police seized drugs worth more than ₹682 crore, as part of their relentless efforts to combat illegal activities in the state.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, during a media interaction at the State Guest House in Koinadhara, Guwahati, revealed that the police had confiscated 183 kg of heroin and other narcotics worth ₹682.44 crore in the previous year.

CM Sarma highlighted the growing scale of drug seizures over the years, stating, “In 2021, drugs worth ₹420.17 crore were seized, followed by ₹784.55 crore in 2022, ₹742.09 crore in 2023, and ₹682.44 crore last year.” The total haul in 2024 included 22,776 kg of ganja, 114 kg of opium, 33.07 lakh psychotropic substance tablets, 14 kg of morphine, and 2.30 lakh bottles of cough syrup.

In addition to drug-related arrests, the police registered 3,287 cases across the state, arresting 5,059 individuals involved in various drug-related activities. Assam Police also continued its campaign against *child marriage, arresting 5,978 persons and registering 6,361 cases between 2021 and 2024. The authorities are determined to continue their efforts to curb illegal activities and ensure public safety.
