Tripura CM Vows to Prevent Return of Insurgency, Focuses on Development
Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha firmly assured that his government would not allow insurgency to resurface in the northeastern state. His statement comes in the wake of recent reports about armed militants moving across the border in Kanchanpur, North Tripura.
Addressing a public event, Saha stated, “Some people are saying that insurgency is set to stage a comeback in the northeastern state. We are keeping a close eye on the situation, and the security forces have been instructed to take necessary measures. We will not allow the insurgency to return.”
Kanchanpur, a subdivision of North Tripura, was once a hotspot for violence during the late 1990s. It shares a 48-km international border with Bangladesh’s Khagracherri and Bandarban districts. While the border is largely fenced, a 300-meter stretch remains unfenced due to challenging hilly terrain, raising security concerns.
Taking a swipe at the opposition, Saha criticized their failure to acknowledge the state’s developmental achievements. Highlighting Tripura’s successful hosting of the 72nd plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC), he noted, “Earlier, such mega events were held in Guwahati or Shillong. This time, Agartala successfully hosted the session, earning praise from northeastern governors who expressed their desire for the city to host similar events in the future.”
In addition to security and development, the chief minister emphasized his government’s push for improving healthcare infrastructure. During a recent visit to Delhi, Saha advocated for establishing an AIIMS or NEIGRIHMS-like institution in Tripura to provide modern healthcare facilities for the state’s residents. “I have urged the central government to consider setting up such institutions, which would significantly boost healthcare services in Tripura,” he said.
Saha’s remarks underline his government’s commitment to maintaining peace while driving progress across various sectors in the state.
