Assam: Rescue Operations Continue at Coal Mine in Umrangso as Water Levels Persist
Assam: Inspector Roshan Kumar Singh, the team commander of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), confirmed that despite intensive efforts, the water level at the mining accident site remains unchanged. The ongoing operation, supported by Sonar equipment, is hindered by the constant inflow of water into the mine.
Singh stated, “We have searched the vertical area but haven’t been able to find anything. We are proceeding further with removing water from the mine… The water level has only increased, not decreased. This is a joint operation involving the Navy, NDRF, and Indian Army.”
He further added that the operation has now entered its third day, with rescue teams utilizing sonar technology to locate the trapped workers.
Earlier today, rescue efforts were underway, with HPS Kandari, the commandant of the NDRF’s 1st Battalion, reporting that two pumps are being used to drain the water. He confirmed that the process would continue overnight, after which a manual search would begin once the water is removed. “The process has already started; one pump is already in operation, and the second one is also getting started. This process will go on for the night. Once the water is removed, we can go inside and conduct the manual search,” Kandari said.
A joint rescue operation, involving the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, NDRF, SDRF teams, and other agencies, is in full swing to rescue eight workers trapped in the coal mine at 3 Kilo, Umrangso, since January 6. Unfortunately, the body of one of the nine workers has been recovered from the site.
