Manipur Honors Maharaj Gambhir Singh on 191st Death Anniversary, Unveils Rs 40 Crore Museum
Imphal: Manipur marked the 191st death anniversary of Maharaj Gambhir Singh, a revered figure in the state’s history who played a critical role in liberating Manipur from Burmese invaders.
The observance took place at his Samadhi in Langthabal, Imphal West, where Chief Minister N. Biren Singh laid the foundation stone for a new Rs 40 crore museum dedicated to the late ruler’s legacy.
The Maharaj Gambhir Singh Museum is designed to preserve and promote the rich history of Manipur, with an emphasis on the contributions of prominent leaders like Gambhir Singh.
CM Biren Singh highlighted the museum’s role in educating future generations about the sacrifices made to safeguard the state’s sovereignty.
In a media interaction, the Chief Minister also addressed a recent incident at the Mekola Relief Camp, where a suicide was reported.
He clarified that initial investigations pointed to personal family issues, not camp mistreatment, and confirmed that an FIR had been filed, with investigations underway.
Singh also stressed the importance of border security, urging vigilance against illegal immigration to ensure the stability of the state. On the growing concern of online bullying and misuse of social media, the Chief Minister expressed alarm over the divisive content causing communal tensions. He stated that the cybercrime department had made arrests and blocked multiple accounts promoting discord, reaffirming the government’s commitment to legal action against offenders.
The ceremony was attended by ministers, MLAs, officials, and academicians, all underscoring the event’s significance in both commemorating Manipur’s rich heritage and honoring its historic heroes.
