Manipur Chief Minister Responds to Death of Woman at Mekola Relief Camp
Imphal: Chief Minister N. Biren Singh addressed the recent death of a woman at the Mekola Higher Secondary School relief camp, emphasizing that the incident was likely caused by personal family issues rather than any ill-treatment or inconvenience within the camp.
“We have registered an FIR, and based on the information available to me, the incident seems unrelated to conditions in the camp. The investigation is already underway,” the chief minister confirmed.
The tragic event occurred on January 7, when 20-year-old Sukham Chanu Devi, who had been staying at the relief camp in Imphal West with her husband and two other family members, died by suicide. Chanu, originally from Singhat in Churachandpur district, had been married for just four months to Sukham James. Her body was discovered hanging near her bed around 4:15 pm, reportedly while her husband was at work.
Authorities have confirmed that Chanu’s body was sent to the JNIMS morgue for a post-mortem, and Nambol police have registered a case. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
