Assam: Indigenous Communities Protest Encroachments on Historic Numaligarh Beel

Assam: Indigenous communities and tribal organizations in Numaligarh, Assam, have raised serious concerns over alleged illegal encroachments on the historic Numaligarh Beel, a wetland of immense ecological and cultural importance.

Accusations have been leveled against land mafias and certain traders who are purportedly attempting to seize portions of the beel, posing a grave threat to the habitat of diverse wildlife, including numerous bird species and reptiles.

The beel, deeply intertwined with the legend of Numali Kuwari, holds significant historical and ecological value. Protesters fear that the destruction of the wetland and the surrounding forested areas will exacerbate human-wildlife conflicts, particularly with wild elephants losing vital grazing grounds. “The illegal occupation of these lands endangers our environment, our heritage, and the safety of nearby villages,” stated a concerned local resident.

Several indigenous and tribal groups have formally lodged complaints with the Golaghat and Bokakhat district administrations, demanding a thorough investigation and swift action against the alleged encroachers.
