Mob Destroys Assam Rifles Camp in Manipur Amid Ongoing Tensions

Imphal: In the strife-torn state of Manipur, a mob stormed and destroyed a makeshift camp of the Assam Rifles in the Kamjong district on January 11, escalating tensions in the region.

The attack occurred in the Hongbei area, where residents from the Kasom Khullen block, a Naga-majority region, expressed anger over alleged harassment and restrictions imposed by the paramilitary force on the transportation of timber.

The confrontation reportedly began on Saturday when Assam Rifles personnel allegedly barred the transportation of timber intended for constructing houses in Kasom Khullen. The restriction sparked outrage among locals, culminating in the mob’s attack on the camp.

In an attempt to control the situation, Assam Rifles personnel used tear gas and fired into the air to disperse the protesters. Despite these measures, the mob succeeded in destroying the temporary camp and demanded the removal of the paramilitary force from the area. Officials confirmed that no casualties were reported during the incident.

The Assam Rifles is one of the central forces deployed across Manipur to maintain order amid ongoing ethnic violence between the Kuki and Meitei communities. The state has been embroiled in conflict since May 2023, with over 250 lives lost and thousands displaced.

The incident highlights the growing challenges faced by security forces operating in the region, where tensions remain high and grievances among local communities continue to fuel unrest. Authorities have yet to comment on the demands for the Assam Rifles’ withdrawal from the area or provide further details about the alleged restrictions on timber transportation.

The situation in Manipur remains volatile, underscoring the urgent need for dialogue and resolution to address the deep-rooted ethnic and logistical challenges affecting the state.
