MoS Pabitra Margherita to Strengthen India’s Indo-Pacific Ties with Visit to the Philippines, Palau, and FSM
Assam: Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles, Pabitra Margherita, is set to embark on a significant visit to the Philippines, Republic of Palau, and the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) from January 14-21. This visit aligns with India’s Act East Policy and Indo-Pacific vision, aiming to bolster partnerships with these key nations.
In the Philippines, Margherita will call on the country’s leadership and honor Mahatma Gandhi by laying floral tributes at his bust at the Centre for Peace Education in Manila. Additionally, he will engage with the Indian diaspora in the Philippines. The visit holds special significance as it coincides with the 75th anniversary of India-Philippines bilateral relations, emphasizing the growing ties between the two nations.
Building on the momentum of the historic 3rd Summit of the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2023, Margherita’s visit to the Pacific nations is expected to further deepen India’s engagement with the region.
In Palau, the minister will attend the swearing-in ceremony of President Surangel Whipps Jr. for his second term on January 16. He will also hold discussions with Palauan leadership and review India-backed development projects in the country.
Marking a milestone in India’s diplomatic history, Margherita will then proceed to the Federated States of Micronesia on January 18, making it the first ministerial-level visit from India to the FSM. This visit is seen as a significant step in advancing India’s ties with Pacific Island Countries and enhancing India’s presence in the Indo-Pacific region.
