Mawlai Crushes Khliehmawlieh 8-0 to Advance to Meghalaya State League Semifinals
Shillong: In a spectacular display of dominance, Mawlai secured an emphatic 8-0 victory over Khliehmawlieh in the Meghalaya State League 2024 quarterfinals at the SSA Stadium on January 11, ensuring their spot in the semifinals of the state’s premier football tournament.
Mawlai, who suffered elimination at the hands of Khliehmawlieh in last year’s semifinals, showed no signs of faltering this time. Taking a 2-0 lead in the first half, Mawlai capitalized on an own goal in the 26th minute and a stunning left-footed strike by Khrawkupar Jana in the 35th. The second half saw an unrelenting attack by Mawlai, with Robert Khongriah scoring twice in the 53rd and 55th minutes. Substitute Romarius Laban added two more goals in the 64th and 83rd minutes, while Khrawkupar completed his brace in the 87th minute. Kevin Rymbai rounded off the rout in stoppage time.
Despite Khliehmawlieh’s best efforts, including a close chance by Kyntiew Myrthong, they could not replicate their MSL 2023 heroics. Mawlai’s tactical precision and relentless attacking play left no room for a comeback. For his contributions, Robertson was named Player of the Match, receiving his award from Meghalaya Football Association President Hamletson Dohling.
In the day’s other quarterfinal, Ladthadlaboh triumphed over Sutnga in a thrilling Jaintia Hills Derby, winning 5-2. After trailing early to a 13th-minute goal by Raplangki Lyngdoh of Sutnga, Ladthadlaboh equalized through Rangdajied Sayoo before halftime. The second half saw Ladthadlaboh dominate, with goals from Dangaitlang Mulieh, Rangdajied, Banteilang Shylla, and Dowell John Shylla sealing their place in the semifinals.
Meanwhile, Shillong Lajong had already booked their semifinal spot last week, defeating defending champions Rangdajied United 3-1. The final quarterfinal clash between Chipakkore and Rymbai Shkenshynriah will take place at the PA Sangma Stadium in Tura on January 14.
