UGC Approves Four Teaching Positions for Assamese Department at Visva Bharati University

Assam: In a significant development, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved the creation of four teaching positions in the Assamese Department at Visva Bharati University, Shantiniketan. This comes after the department received approval for its upgradation to a full-fledged higher education entity.

The UGC has recommended the appointment of one associate professor and three assistant professors to enhance the academic capabilities of the department. This approval follows the submission of a proposal by the university in March 2024, requesting the establishment of an Assamese department with six teaching and eight non-teaching positions.

The department, which was established in 1979 with just a single professor, is set to celebrate its golden jubilee in four years. This marks a major milestone for the department as it moves toward strengthening its academic framework and expanding its faculty to meet the growing demand for quality education in the field of Assamese language and literature.
