Assam: Kokrajhar MLA Expresses Concern Over Loss of Lives in Umrangso Coal Mine Incident

Assam: Kokrajhar’s West Tribal Community MLA, Rabiram Narzary, has expressed deep sorrow and concern over the tragic loss of two individuals from his constituency, who were among the miners trapped in the flooded rat-hole coal mine in Umrangso, Dima Hasao district. The incident, which occurred on January 6, has resulted in the death of several miners, with four bodies recovered so far and five still missing.

“It’s a very unfortunate incident. Two individuals from my constituency, who had gone to work in Umrangso, Dima Hasao, where illegal mining was taking place, got trapped and lost their lives. It’s very sad news and extremely unfortunate for us,” Narzary said in his statement.

The tragic accident occurred when the rat-hole mine was inundated, trapping the workers inside. Rescue operations are still underway, with teams from the Indian Army, Navy, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) working tirelessly to locate the missing miners. Water levels inside the mine are gradually receding, providing hope for the recovery of the remaining trapped workers.

Narzary has urged the Assam government to provide financial assistance to the bereaved families and to offer government jobs to help support them during this difficult time. The MLA emphasized the urgent need for compensation and stability for the families who have lost their breadwinners in this heartbreaking incident.

As the rescue operations continue, further updates are expected in the coming days.
