BSF Meghalaya Apprehends Man with Elephant Tusks, Foils Wildlife Smuggling Attempt
Imphal: The Border Security Force (BSF) in Meghalaya apprehended an Indian national involved in the illegal wildlife trade after recovering ivory and elephant tusks intended for smuggling into Bangladesh. Acting on specific intelligence, the troops of the 1st Battalion, BSF Meghalaya, successfully carried out the operation on January 12, 2025.
According to the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of BSF Meghalaya, the seized tusks were handed over to the District Forest Office in Baghmara for further legal proceedings and investigation. The BSF reiterated its commitment to combating wildlife trafficking and cross-border smuggling, emphasizing its role in safeguarding the nation’s biodiversity and borders.
In a related operation the same day, the BSF detained four Bangladeshi nationals and three Indian touts near the international border in East Khasi Hills. Troops from the 4th Battalion intercepted the group attempting illegal entry into India, acting on intelligence inputs.
The BSF remains resolute in its mission to curb illegal activities such as smuggling, infiltration, and wildlife trafficking, further strengthening its vigilance along India’s northeastern borders.
