Manipur Student Organisations Condemn Attack on Civilians in Maremei Liangmai Village, Demand Justice
Imphal: A wave of outrage has erupted across Manipur and beyond as multiple student organisations strongly condemned the alleged assault on civilians in Maremei Liangmai village on January 12.
The attack, reportedly carried out by armed personnel, left six women and two men injured, prompting widespread calls for accountability.
In a press release, the Liangmai Students’ Union Nagaland (LSUN) decried the attack as “reprehensible and inhumane,” demanding immediate action against the perpetrators. “Such acts of violence have no place in a society that values humanity and justice,” the organisation declared.
The Zeliangrong Students’ Union Delhi (ZSUD) echoed the condemnation, expressing dismay that those responsible were allegedly individuals entrusted with the protection of the Naga people. “It is unfathomable and deeply unfortunate that those tasked as guardians could perpetrate such barbaric acts,” the union stated, urging authorities to take swift and decisive action.
Global Liangmai, a prominent community organisation, described the harrowing details of the incident. According to their account, more than 20 armed individuals stormed the village at approximately 7 pm while the victims were having dinner. The organisation has vowed to seek justice through international channels, including the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO), if domestic mechanisms fail to deliver accountability.
One victim remains critically injured at Raj Medicity in Imphal, while others are being treated at Senapati Hospital for physical injuries and emotional trauma. The attack has left the community in shock, with many questioning the lack of security and accountability in the region.
The LSUN called for a transparent investigation and severe punishment for those responsible. “We will explore all necessary measures to ensure justice is served,” the organisation warned, urging authorities to act swiftly to restore faith in the system.
Student bodies have also appealed to civil society organisations and citizens to unite in condemning the violence and supporting the victims. “This is not just a crime against individuals but an assault on the very fabric of our society,” ZSUD stated, urging solidarity in the pursuit of justice.
The incident has further intensified demands for peace and security in the region, with calls for immediate government intervention to prevent such tragedies in the future.
