Tension Erupts Over Handling of Drug Arrests at Assam-Nagaland Border
Assam: Tensions have flared along the Assam-Nagaland border following the arrest of two Naga youths in Merapani for carrying illegal drugs. The youths, identified as Ranch Kikon and Chambe, were apprehended by local residents near the Deyalpur area on Wednesday evening while transporting 333 tablets of the banned drug ‘Simpex’ on a motorcycle.
The situation escalated when the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), stationed at the border as a neutral force, intervened and handed over the accused to Nagaland police, bypassing the Assam police. This move has sparked widespread dissatisfaction among the local Assamese population, who questioned the CRPF’s decision and expressed concerns about Assam’s jurisdictional authority being undermined.
Initial reports suggest that the two arrested individuals are alleged to be officers in the Nagaland police, adding a layer of complexity to the incident. Despite the Assam police’s involvement in the case, the CRPF’s decision to transfer custody of the accused to Nagaland police has provoked anger and frustration among the residents of Merapani.
Local residents have criticized the CRPF for its handling of the situation, accusing the neutral force of favoring one side and undermining Assam’s ability to enforce its laws within its territory. The incident has reignited tensions over border disputes between Assam and Nagaland, further straining relations in the region.
This case has raised pressing questions about jurisdiction, neutrality, and the enforcement of law in sensitive border areas. As public outrage grows, both state governments and central authorities may face mounting pressure to address the situation and ensure that justice is served transparently and fairly.
